WELCOME TO THE EMPOWERING PLATFORM

In the music industry, women have long faced systemic challenges and gender-based discrimination. Historically, they have been relegated to roles such as singers or performers, with limited opportunities for leadership or creative control. Music is closely observed by the world’s youth and “…often provides them with role models” (Samuelson, 2019). However, in recent decades, women have increasingly challenged these norms, catalyzing a revolution in the music industry. One of the most significant challenges women have faced is the pervasive sexism that permeates the industry. From unequal pay to objectification and sexual harassment, women have had to navigate a hostile environment to pursue their passion for music (Bain, 2023). For every big name making tens of millions of dollars, “…there are thousands of other women who encounter barriers and low pay” (Santovec, 2019). Despite these obstacles, women have persisted, carving out spaces for themselves and demanding equal treatment and respect.

Women have challenged stereotypes and expanded the definition of what it means to be a musician or music professional. They have excelled not only as performers but also as producers, engineers, composers, and executives. Through their talent and determination, women have shattered glass ceilings and proven their prowess in every aspect of the music business. Additionally, women have used their platforms to advocate for social change and address important issues through their music. From feminism to LGBTQ+ rights, women in the music industry have amplified marginalized voices and sparked important conversations about equality and justice. A prime example of an industry trailblazer is Miley Cyrus as she continuously challenges norms and advocates for LGBTQ+ rights and awareness (Sternlicht, 2021).

Further, women in the music industry have faced numerous challenges, from sexism and discrimination to limited opportunities for creative expression. However, they have refused to be silenced or sidelined, instead, they have risen to the occasion, challenging norms, breaking barriers, and reshaping the industry in their image. Through their talent, resilience, and activism, women have revolutionized the music industry, paving the way for future generations of artists and professionals to thrive regardless of gender (Dickerson, 1998). It is significant to examine various examples of women in the music industry who have made an impact on society to not only remember their actions but to learn about their bravery and acknowledge the unfair aspects of the music industry.
